Overview

Mount Kenya, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a variety of climbing and trekking experiences. Its highest peak, Batian (5,199m), requires advanced technical climbing skills, while Nelion (5,188m) also presents a significant challenge. Point Lenana (4,985m), is the most accessible peak to most hikers with good fitness and proper preparation. The Chogoria–Sirimon route is widely regarded as the most scenic and rewarding way to ascend Mount Kenya, culminating at Point Lenana, the mountain’s third-highest peak.

Tour Plan

Day 1 Nairobi – Mt Kenya Bandas (2,900m)

Drive Time: Approx. 3 hrs

Hiking Distance: 10 km

Ascent: 650m
Depart Nairobi at 08:00, travelling through rich agricultural highlands to Chogoria town, where we break for lunch. We then transfer by 4×4 vehicle to the forest edge and begin our hike through the bamboo zone to the Mount Kenya Bandas campsite.

Day 2 Mt Kenya Bandas – Lake Ellis Camp (3,600m)

Hiking Distance: Approx. 12 km

Ascent: 700m
After breakfast, we sort gear with the porters and begin a scenic trek via Lake Ellis. This less-trodden route provides excellent views of Mugi, Ithanguni, and the Giants’ Billiards Table. We stop for lunch by a stream before making our way uphill to the Lake Ellis campsite, located in a quiet, untouristed part of the mountain.

Day 3 Lake Ellis – Mintos Camp (4,200m)

Hiking Time: 4 hrs

Distance: 12 km

Ascent: 600m
We start early and follow a ridge off the main path for about three hours before rejoining the traditional Chogoria route at around 4,100m. Stunning views open up over the Gorges Valley, Ithanguni, and the Northern Moorlands. After lunch at a stream, we continue to Mintos Camp for the night. In the afternoon, we recommend a short 10-minute walk to The Temple – a 150m vertical cliff offering dramatic views. Rest early in preparation for the summit bid.

Day 4 Mintos – Point Lenana (4,985m) – Old Moses Camp (3,300m)

Start Time: 03:00

Total Distance: 24 km

Ascent: 785m

Descent: 1,685m
We begin our pre-dawn summit attempt at 3:00am, reaching Point Lenana in time for sunrise. After enjoying the view, we descend to Shipton Camp for breakfast. From there, we continue down through Mackinder’s Valley to Old Moses Camp for overnight stay. This descent offers remarkable moorland and mountain scenery.

Day 5 Old Moses Camp – Sirimon Gate – Nairobi

Hiking Time: 3 hrs

After an early breakfast, descend to the Sirimon Gate, where our vehicle awaits for return back to Nairobi, arriving late afternoon
